Abstract

The paper is based on Iron and Digor (more archaic) dialect evidence. The analysis of the formation of aspect in modern Ossetic leads to two major conclusions. The first is that the aspect category in the Ossetic language is relatively young, and the second is that the processes of aspect category formation in Russian and Ossetic are typologically similar.

In most cases, prefixes lend Ossetic verbs perfective meanings. This paper focuses on the semantic features of the prefix -, notable for a wide variety of aspectual and actional meanings it can express. The aspectual-functional semantics of prefixed verbs with - currently reflects different stages of aspect development in Ossetic, with examples ranging from complete absence of aspectual meanings in these prefixed verbs to distinct differentiation between the meanings of imperfect / perfect types in a pair of prefixed verbs with -. No less interesting are observations on how such factors as areal influence and genetic features impact these verbs’ aspectual meanings.

In addition, the specific features of verbs with - make it possible to draw parallels with the functions of the prefix ga- in Gothic and with the development history of the perfectivizing function of prefixes in Russian.
