Краткая история официальной переписи языков Индии (1901–2011)

В статье прослеживается, как неоднозначность, присущая подсчету родных языков в постколониальной Индии, отражается в вековой истории переписей. Утверждается, что в переписях, проведенных после 1971 г., наблюдается переход от выявления отдельных языков к использованию «языковых ярлыков», и такая методология затемняет, а не проясняет языковое разнообразие. В противоположность распространенному мнению, что такая практика является колониальным наследием, в статье показано, что переписи, выполненные в период создания Linguistic Survey of India (1894–1928), лучше отражали многоязыковую реальность страны. Напротив, современную ориентацию к минимизации можно связать с манипулированием конституционными положениями.
